Half a million reasons why

Our R&D team continue to win big tax repayments for clients across the business spectrum.

Working with the accountant representing afirm of architects, our experts identified an R&D claim based on the innovative technology being used to improve design quality and constructional tolerances in brickworking and for the three dimensional bending of steel pipes. Despite being an established firm, the architects had never made an R&D claim before.

Our accountancy partner made contact with us just days before the opportunity to submit a claim would lapse. Moving quickly to meet with the firm and to quantify the qualifying activities, the successful claim was made with a day to spare. The claim covered two accounting periods and generated a repayment in excess of £300,000 and a further £50,000 in tax credits.

In another case recently handled by our experts, a company specialising in economic modelling and statistical analysis were disappointed to be told by one of our competitors that an R&D claim did not exist and came to Abbey Tax for a second opinion.

Our team uncovered qualifying activities including model analysis to detect stock market insider dealing, autonomous big data filtration for inter-continental bank risk modelling and predictive analytics to model consumer spend demographics from electronic point of sale data.

With offices in the UK, Russia, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and the US, the company had also been mistakenly advised the inter-company structuring of the costs would make them ineligible.

After a careful review of the costs met by the UK entity, it was highlighted that three of the global offices had incurred qualifying spend via the UK trading entity. Once clarified and correctly structured, with no more than three emails needed to the international offices to exclude questionable or non-qualifying costs, the claim was prepared and submitted within two weeks of receiving all of the necessary information.

Needless to say, the client was overjoyed to receive £180,000 from a claim originally deemed to be non–existent.

Our R&D Director, John Moxon, commented: ‘These case studies demonstrate how our forensic approach to computing claims yields big results for our clients. Our accountancy partners appreciate our collaborative style and the depth of our knowledge across a whole host of industry sectors. I would recommend a quick free call to one of our experts to see whether a claim can be made.’
