Senior Management
Our senior management team consists of:
Colin Davison – Chief Executive Officer of Abbey Protection Group Limited
Colin founded Abbey Tax Protection Limited in December 1996 as a sister company to Abbey Legal Protection Limited. Colin was Managing Director of Abbey Tax until December 2004 when Abbey Tax Protection became a trading division of Abbey Protection Group Limited. In January 2004, Colin was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Abbey Protection Group Limited, following a management buy out of the majority shareholding in the group.
Colin has overseen the growth of Abbey Tax from nothing to the £11.5 million turnover business it is today and has been responsible for the introduction of its new products. He has also arranged several bespoke insurances for ‘one off’ tax solution arrangements which has generated substantial fees to the company.
Prior to joining Abbey Tax, Colin worked for the Inland Revenue for six years, then spent a further six years working for another well known provider of tax investigations insurance products.
Liz Grace - Operations Director of Abbey Tax Protection
Liz helped Colin Davison set up Abbey Tax Protection Ltd in December 1996 and whilst her principle responsibilities were as Claims & Underwriting Manager, Liz was responsible for a great deal of the accountancy sales in the first couple of years; 99% of these clients remain her clients some 10 years later.
She became Operations Director of Abbey Tax in 2001 and took over responsibility for the day to day running of Abbey Tax, although her main area of expertise is in the Claims & Underwriting arena. Liz became a Board Director of Abbey Protection Group Limited in January 2004.
Prior to joining Abbey Tax, Liz worked for 10 years for a rival Fee Protection provider, and prior to that for 5 years at the Inland Revenue.

Our consultancy has a wealth of experience demonstrated by their previous roles prior to joining Abbey Tax.
David Marples – Affinity Group Manager
David started his working life in the Inland Revenue where he remained for the next 14 years. During this time, David was an Employer Compliance Officer before becoming an Inspector dealing with enquiries into Sole Traders, Partnerships and Companies. David also gained experience of dealing with the General Commissioners on contentious cases.
David joined Abbey Tax in December 1997 and now heads the consultancy team consisting of 15 ex-Inspectors, Customs & Excise investigators and tax consultants. The team provide representation for numerous clients being subjected to Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise enquiries as well as providing telephone tax advice to our clients.
David’s specialist area lies in enquiry work where he has vast experience and has written various articles and given lectures on the subject.
Richard Hier –Managing Consultant
Richard worked for the Inland Revenue for 19 years, 9 years were spent in the Revenue Collection Office but as an Inspector of Taxes he dealt with enquiries into Sole Traders and Partnerships. More latterly, Richard was involved in Area Management of an enquiry team and also reviewed complaints received at the Area level. Richard joined the Abbey Tax consultancy team in January 2005 dealing with enquiries on behalf of clients as well as providing telephone tax enquiry advice.
Richard is also responsible for our ReCap service which surveys commercial buildings, values items of qualifying expenditure and prepares a report so that a claim for additional “embedded” Capital Allowances can be made to HMRC. Nigel Ferrington – Senior VAT Consultant
Nigel worked for Customs & Excise for over 10 years working in Uniform Branch, Deregistration and Registration office and as a VAT visiting Officer. Nigel left Customs to join a rival fee protection provider where he remained for 9 years before becoming the VAT manager for Moores Rowland and latterly BDO Stoy Hayward in Birmingham. Nigel joined Abbey Tax in 1999 where he provides VAT advice and representation to our accountancy clients and affinity group members. Nigel is a veteran of over 100 VAT Tribunals.
Steve Mullard – Senior Tax Consultant
Steve worked for 21 years in the Inland Revenue during which time he became an Inspector of Taxes dealing with enquiries into sole traders, partnerships & limited companies, before joining Special Office - now part of Special Civil Investigations [“SCI”]. Whilst in Special Office, Steve was involved in a number of projects into high profile sectors such as football, rugby and the motor racing industry. Steve was head-hunted from the Revenue to join PwC where he defended a number of individuals being investigated by, amongst others, Special Office!
Steve joined the Abbey Tax Consultancy team in 2001 and has dealt with numerous enquiries investigated by both HMRC local district offices and SCI. Steve also lectures to accountants about SCI enquiries under Code of Practice 8 and Code of Practice 9.
Jacqui Mann – Senior Tax Consultant
Jacqui used to be an Inspector of Taxes for the Inland Revenue before joining a regional firm of Chartered Accountants in 1996 where she undertook a consultancy role for clients under investigation as well as advising on PAYE Compliance and Benefits In Kind. Jacqui’s husband himself owns a small business so Jacqui is uniquely placed to understand the demands on businesses today. Jacqui joined Abbey Tax in 2002 and is the consultant for the East Anglia region.
Ian Stewart – Senior Tax Consultant
Ian worked for the Inland Revenue for 32 years, the last 10 of which were spent as an Inspector of Taxes dealing with enquiries into Sole Traders and Partnerships. Ian was also responsible for the running of the General Commissioners Hearings for the Office and so gained considerable experience in this area. Ian joined the Abbey Tax consultancy team in March 2002 and has since represented hundreds of clients being subjected to Inland Revenue Local Office enquiries.
Guy Smith – Senior Tax Consultant
Guy worked for the Inland Revenue as an Inspector of Taxes dealing with enquiries into Sole Traders and Partnerships. Guy was also involved in the Revenue JoSET (Joint Shadow Economy Teams) pilot project that was the forerunner to the merger of the Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise. This team targeted specific traders and areas using various methods such as covert observations. Since joining the Abbey Tax Consultancy team in April 2003, Guy has handled numerous enquires on behalf of clients and also given seminars about the operation of the JoSET.
James Cordiner – Senior Tax Consultant
James previously worked for the Inland Revenue as an Inspector of Taxes dealing with enquiries into Sole Traders and Partnerships. James joined the Abbey Tax consultancy team in January 2005 and is representing Sole traders, Partnerships and Companies under enquiry at local office level.
Nigel Nordone - Senior Tax Consultant
Nigel worked for HMRC for 21 years during which time he dealt with Enquiries into sole traders and partnerships as an Inspector of Taxes. During the last 12 months working for HMRC, Nigel was the Manager of the Employer Compliance Team being responsible for technical issues arising for payroll inspections. Nigel joined Abbey Tax in June 2006 and is now responsible for dealing with Revenue Enquiries on behalf of affinity group clients as well as providing telephone advice to clients.
Steve Price – Senior Tax Consultant
Steve worked for HM Revenue & Customs for 31 years having vast experience in all aspects of Collection, Taxes, Employer Compliance & Enquiry work. For the last 9 years he was an Inspector of Taxes dealing with enquiries into Sole Traders, Partnerships, and Companies. Most recently Steve was involved in HMRC’s enquiry selection process and managed a team dealing mainly with company enquiries. Steve joined the Abbey Tax consultancy team in September 2007 and is representing sole traders, partnerships and companies under enquiry at local office level.
Paul Anderson – Senior Tax Consultant
Paul worked within the Revenue for 32 years. He began his career in the Revenue Collection Division progressing to Auditor and Manager of an Employer Compliance team. Paul became an Inspector of Taxes, based in the Oxford and Banbury area, in 1999 handling various investigations but with a focus on Full and Aspect Enquiries into the Sole traders and Partnerships. Paul joined Abbey Tax in February 2008 and is handling a variety of investigations within the Consultancy team.
Margo McKenzie – Advisory Group Manager
Margo worked for the Inland Revenue for 22 years dealing with all aspects of personal tax from Directors to Sole Traders and Partners. During this time, Margo was also responsible for the running of the Revenue local office advice team, giving general tax advice to individual taxpayers. Margo joined Abbey Tax in April 2000 and provides telephone advice, on all areas of taxation, to our various clients. Since joining Abbey Tax, Margo has become a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians.
Brian Harrap – Tax Consultant
Brian worked for the Inland Revenue for many years before joining private practice where he worked as a Tax Manager dealing with a general portfolio of clients. Brian joined Abbey Tax in April 2000 and provides telephone advice to our various clients on all areas of taxation although does specialise in the Construction Industry and IR35 issues.
Scott Whitmore - Tax Consultant
Scott joined ATP in August 2006. He has 15 years’ experience in private practice, starting off on the accounting side before moving into taxation, mainly handling the affairs of individuals and partnerships.
Katherine Reed, CTA, ACCA – Tax Consultant
Katherine recently joined the telephone advisory team from a Big 4 firm, where she was Assistant Manager in the Private Client sector. She has seven years experience in providing advice in all areas of personal taxation with specific knowledge of dealing with corporate insolvencies.
Zeeshan Bawany, AAT, ATT – Tax Consultant
Zeeshan is the newest member of our team, having recently joined us from private practice where he was head of the personal taxation department. For several years he was also a lecturer in business and personal tax for the Association of Accounting Technicians, and has also run his own successful business outside the tax field. He is currently studying for ACCA and hopes to complete this in June 2008.
Claims Department
Our claims team handle a number of claims on policies and their experience and knowledge means you can be assured of a high standard of service and an excellent quality of claims handling decisions giving you a fast and efficient decision regarding your claim.
Debbie Jarman – Claims Manager
Debbie worked within the Inland Revenue from 1985 to1994 as Manager of a clerical section in addition to working as a caseworker within Schedule E (Pay-As-You-Earn), PAYE Compliance and examination of low turnover Schedule D accounts (self-employment).
From 1994 Debbie worked for a rival fee protection provider and developed the Claims Department within the Division developing procedures and protocols for claims decision making.
Debbie joined Abbey Tax in 1997 as a Senior Claims Consultant overseeing the technical aspects of claims and is now engaged in risk assessing accountancy practices and setting underwriting premiums in conjunction with our Operations Director.

Our Client Services team will be a main contact point for our clients throughout their schemes. On commencement of a scheme, practices are allocated a dedicated client services administrator to manage and help implement your scheme. Your administrator will generally be your first point of contact in regards to any changes or queries you have regarding your scheme.

Contractor Division
Paul Mason – Manager of Contractor Division
Paul joined Abbey Tax in 1997 with six years prior experience of helping firms to set up and market fee protection schemes. His involvement with the profession began with a training contract with a 4 partner West End firm where he became a semi-senior, before moving on to a three-year spell in accountancy recruitment.
Paul’s role at Abbey Tax has developed into a mixture of business development, account management and technical support for the sales team and now heads up our Contractor Division.
